Your expedition to the frozen river starts when you arrive in the high altitude region of Ladakh nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas.
It’s a destination that has been a pinnacle for many intrepid travellers due to its breathtaking beauty and traditional charm.
The 100km trek itself is not for the faint hearted, coupled with the altitude, conditions are only favourable in late January early February due to the sustained sub-zero temperatures that freeze the river. Trek down the middle of the river as the steep sides of the Zanskar Gorge rises up above you. In some places there may be cracks in the ice and this will lead you to explore the river banks as you clamber across boulders and snowy rocks. Throughout your journey you will be walking in the snow leopard’s domain – you will be lucky to see one of these elusive felines however you’re more likely to spot tracks and signs of their presence.
